A few days ago I released the much anticipated Crimson Glory. All the reasons for it being cancelled were stated in my news post on soldat.pl on June 16. Fortunately all is not lost. The Crimson Engine was from beginning developed with 2D games in mind. I was making it with the intention of maybe even doing Soldat 2 based on it. But with all that I still wanted to make Crimson Glory. It would be a fantastic game. I don’t know if you can see it through the release I made, but the possibilities are just endless and very exciting. Very exciting for the gamer but for the game developer it would be too hard. 3D is just too much work.
Just look at Half-Life 2 mods. It takes 2 years to develop a decent mod. There are 20 people involved in any mod project and it’s virtually impossible to manage such a project, especially if it’s meant to be free. So my philosophy is again, do the graphics in 5 minutes and let the gameplay shine!
That doesn’t mean my new game won’t have good graphics. As a matter of fact, it will have state of the art graphics. I will push 2D rendering to its limits. So expect pixel shaders and other fancy stuff, combined with the brilliant animation system I’m working on it will be a very memorable experience. More on this subject in the future.
So what am I doing now, besides the neverending bug tracking in Soldat? I’m converting the Crimson Engine to work only with 2D. I’m cutting out all the 3D stuff. There is really a lot of it. I made the Cal3D animation library work well with Irrlicht, I made a very good Newton wrapper for Irrlicht. So that’s probably what I want to give back to the programming communities.
I’m still thinking about releasing the whole source code for the game. I have a lot of graphical assets still left made by my brilliant artist Owen. You can see them in the image bucket. This still can become a working game. The reason that is most motivating for me to release the source is that if somebody picks it up we can work simultaneously on the engine. Learning from each other and adding stuff. It can also work for educational purposes, cause the internal structure of the engine will be unchanged. So the knowledge of how it works will come in handy once the SDK comes out for my new game. So yeah, stay tuned.
Let the source code out! At least 25 people have mentioned wanting it, and I know that probably a hundred do want it so they can either learn from it or continue working on it.

yea 2d is a lot better in my opinion… 3d takes a lot of time indeed.. Same would be for mapping then..

As for my opinion on 2D, it is not simply preferable over 3D because it’s simpler and faster to process; it cannot be said to be inferior to 3D. Certainly each has its strong and weak points, but they are different. The 3D graphics are essential for any game that requires certain cameras/views. Many games do (racing and fps in particular), but not ALL. Right now society pushes us to believe that new is better. This resulted in many games having 3d graphics even though they weren’t necessary!
What does this mean? That 3D animations tend to look crap over the years more than 2D ones because they are being abused of. Who’d pick the graphics of the fourth monkey island over those of the third?
The same happens in movies. How cheesy are old CG animations? You’d think the new ones look cool, but with time everybody will notice how much CGI, even in movies released these days, will look outdated and out of place. On the other hand, the original star wars still looks credible, and that is because it was shot entirely using real and not virtual material.
More to the point: 2D (like 3D) still has a lot of potential. Nobody did ever uncover it fully. You spoke in your previous post (on which I agree) of shocking the industry and the masses. This does not necessarily need to be done through the contents; it can be through the medium. Joyce wasn’t a good writer uniquely because of what he wrote, but also HOW he wrote it.
I believe that the next game based on the Crimson Engine will be one step forward already – it will show how much you can do with 2D. The way I see it, it is the most efficent way of making a statement out there, by showing how a small indipendent team can get things done and better than many industry giants. Maybe you won’t become hollywood star famous, or end up on tabloids all over the world (also because of your distinct lack of titties), but it’ll be a fundamental achievement nonetheless. Being able to do things your way is much more important than fame.
if you’ll make something 2d like soldat, please:
add scenery animation support! maps would be brilliant, imagine shining stars, realistic fire etc.. but i think you already considered it
add muuch muuch scripting options for making mods (which would be downloadable from server without closing game unlike to gusanos), allowing players to make for example moving polygons/sceneries to create pseudovehicles.. stationary guns and parachutes as scripts.. just wow..
look at gusanos, it has very powerful scripting options – you can make scripts for maps, weapons, players.. everything ;s you can look at its syntax and create something similar ;p but these scripts should not be parsed while playing (like in my esa
), it should be compilable like in soldat server.
I think that Crimson Glory shouldn’t really be 3D for more that just it’s harder. I say it shouldn’t be 3D because it doesn’t USE that 3rd dimension. It’s jus there to look pretty, unlike in somthing like a FPS where you can access it. If you want to make a 3D game, make it REALLY 3D.
