I decided to release something at least every 3 months just to stretch those releasing muscles. Even though there is a lot of work still to do. This is not April Fools. This is the Link-Dead Deathmatch Test. It is not meant to be perfect in any way. This is just a preview. I know there are countless bugs and I don’t really need to know them from you. So thank you for noticing. What I would like to know is if this is fun or potentially fun, if split-screen works and how it plays, how do you find the bots, what improvements do you want to see in terms of controls, visibility, gameplay (besides the obvious like vehiclze)?
Features:

– bot players
– split-screen for up to 4 players
– 3 weapons + grenades
– slot-based inventory management
– bot, weapons and game rules mod configs
– ‘dust processor’ smoke effects
– dynamic and ambient lighting (try setting to pitch dark (0 0 0) in Maps/breakdown.cfg for a neat gamemode to play with friends)
This version does not contain a couple things which were in previous releases since this is just a test of these specific features. For example networking and pixel shaders are disabled by default since they are buggy now.
I recorded a video tutorial entitled “Link-Dead Deathmatch Test Video Tutorial”. It contains explanations of basic & advanced controls, aswell as how to mod scripts.
BEFORE PLAYING THE GAME OR WHILE DOWNLOADING I encourage you to watch this video.
Briefly about the new controls:
I – for inventory menu – you get items after death and respawn
E – take out grenade – FIRE (left mouse) throw grenade at mouse cursor. The soldier throws the grenade precisely at the cursor, try it.
F (mount weapon) – enable/disable flashlight/lasersight
Q – change weapon / if you have more than 2 weapons hold, move mouse over weapon in pie menu and release button
If you have video card problems or can’t start the game or just want to read additional technical notes on the game read the previous techtest release.
You can play splitscreen without a joystick or controller. Here is how. I would love to see someone pull this off (I managed to do it with a mouse and touchpad).
I would also love to see Youtube uploaded movies of you guys playing in split-screen (up to four players please!)

From what I saw in the video, the laser pointer of the weapon that you do not use should be switched off, right? Otherwise it looks weird as the laser is pointing to the sky and it is just distracting.

Yep, I tried it on two different Notebooks, both Windows XP, same error message.

The old tech demo worked. The *.bat file opens and closes immediately, nothing else happens.

It won’t work for me :/ Previous release worked, and this one isn’t I’ve tried changing options in autoconfig.gm with no positive resoult. When i start the game, it loads all stuff and then it shows me a crash report dialog.

1) the ld-nocrashrpt-noupdate.bat is working great, the normal LD.exe is crashing and trying to send a report.
2)When I press “i”, almost same problem as Luma, the weight-bar and the Hands-slot appears, but everything else in the inventory doesn’t.

To solve the inventory issue open Cache directory and delete all inventory dat files. You’ll need to rearm after that.
@mmankt: For fullscreen you have to look in the menu at the settings and set “fullscreen” to 1, then restart game. I think it was under “hack”.

Hmm… I deleted 4 inventory config from Cash directory, then I managed new weapon set.
Nice, I deleted all inventory dat files and I can see the inventory!
Two things, maybe it helps you guys:
1)At first I thought the inventory is broken, since it was emtpy, but clicking on it gives you the selections.
2)You have to delete that cache every time you start the game, else the inventory becomes invisible again and you keep the weapons you had last time.
next stop, team deathmatch,
i found it fun, i played with 5 bots ( xD )
but i still find the movement, quite,, euh akward and blocky
its not really smooth… kinda feels non responsive.
after a short while i seem to get massive framedrops (from 400 to 2). Only happens when there is a bot.
My review for now:
1) Same as Luma, after a lot of blood and many shootings and grenades, the framerate drops (so I guess it’s either the dustgenerator, the blood on the walls or the gun cartdriges?). But then again, this PC I’m playing on isn’t the newest…
2)MM, you still didn’t change that behaviour when turning around, where the avatar all of a sudden starts walking in the position you’re pointing at. I really feel this is stealing my motion flow. I sometimes want to turn around and fire back while running to the right, but then the avatar, instead of just turning around but still running where I tell him to, starts going to the left all of a sudden and that really slows me down. Please fix this?
3)Bots r cool. And playing against multiple bots proves to be fun as well, even if they can’t handle it that good.
4)Can’t fire through stairs… hmmm… still have to decide if I like this or not. It has many pro’s and con’s.
5)When I jump and hit my head against a wall… I don’t know how it could be done better, but it doesn’t feel right at the moment.
6)Grenades are great, I really like the “throw at cursor” thing, I still need a lot of practice though.
7)Bots are still pretty stupid with grenades, guess they need some practice too.
8)You really need to change those avatars… the colouring is okay, but sometimes, depending on their color, I can’t even friggin see them right. You could call it “camouflage”, but they still look ugly as hell… they’re like a bunch of random coloured pixels in the shape of a humanoid. I’d like to see a real shape.

This happens for me too. It’s a bot bug. They start thinking too much after a couple minutes.

Are there horizontal platforms that can be shot-through? If so, then it’s alright. At the stairs it would be cooler if you could shoot through 1 of the platforms, but not through 2 or more.
I just had the feeling the stairs (including horizontal platforms) block too much, like there’s no light or dust passing through, when really they look like those type of stairs that fire-escapes have, which would allow that.
Still doesnt work for me. Same as woops.
1. terrible performance. after a while when there’s a lot of blood on walls and 2 characters are shooting and close to each other the game drops from 700 to 2 fps.
2. movement is a bit awkward, can get used to it but still feels unnatural.
3. terrible visibility, everything is greenish, ground should have a different texture with different colour, also walls could use some variety – eyes hurt after playing
4. fun grenades but a lil’ too bouncy and u can throw too far
5. bots are fun but they do a LOT of stupid things, sometimes they teleport, sometimes they do nothing
6. shooting is always fun but this is nothing special – i miss bullet physics like in soldat
7. bullet hits just disappear, dust effects on explosions are nice but also weird. overall the explosion effect is shit.
8. particles get stuck in walls. sometimes u can shoot through walls, u can climb through walls.
9. fun to play for a few minutes.

Not much to say. The “sub-inventory menu” is behind the general “inventory menu” instead of in front of it.

Also, I noticed a vehicle button…. Vehicles better be extremely moddable, I want a rock crawler.
Seems to run fine under Wine in Ubuntu.
This demo works in Crossover games on my macbook pro.
Movement is slightly clunky, but gets smoother with a little practice. I feel like there should be a melee/unarmed attack. Grenades take a while to explode, and the game sometimes crashes suddenly.
Yes, I second Grimbad, a melee attack would be great.
Also… what about player collisions, I’d love to ram someone off a building.

Other stuff (inventory, change colors) not work No shoting – boring….
How fix and have inventory – delete “inventory0.dat” and get out from folder inverntory1 and inventory2. Then start game (may some crash but try) and check inventory. Give some weapons and go out from game. In Cache should be inventory0.dat. So then back there inventory1 and inventory2 and then start – i have inventory !! ^^

Hm… In older dlls LD.exe can’t load game.dll, but in newer is bug – lol.
im having a problem, when i start i have no weapon at all and when i kill myself i spawn with no weapon, and the bot will not work, it takes a step then stands their weaponless also

Its better to copy/paste to notepad and then to resource. Well, make sure, you have updated the correct exe name to the manifest.
