If you’re wondering what’s up with Sigvatr. We haven’t really done anything for a couple months together and we officially split up a while ago. As the project moved on it became apparent that we are very similar to each other yet have very different goals (namely make our own game). Hence we can’t work together anymore. Eric is now learning to program and I am learning how to make procedural art.

    1. hah so the game will look like shit

    2. what happened to his website?

    3. Wow, that’s too bad. You can do some cool stuff with procedural graphics, but it’s shit for any kind of “gritty” setting.

    4. So, L-D is dead.

    5. I had the feeling Sigvatr was interested in creating a shocking-game ever since Berserker was announced, I considered that was your way of making a compromise. Seems it didn’t work out though…

It’s a loss, but life goes on. My advice is to find another talented graphic artist. We know you could do it alone, but let someone do it who has long time experience. Otherwise it would cost too much time, effort, and it may not return the quality or quantity of necessary results. You’re the programmer, it’s what you do good, so don’t delegate that.

      ….
      Worst news ever.

    7. sorry 4 another comment but i just wanted to add that it’s good that you’re not working with that guy cuz he was a SICK FUCK. i’ve seen the stuff on his site and it was beyond alarming. Anyways you need to get someone to help you with the art cuz procedural stuff can be an icing on the cake, u still need characters, models, vehicles, specific textures, backgrounds etc.

    8. Find another graphics artist dude, don’t use programmer art! :(

    9. Damn, I was hoping to see a really good game because of your combined efforts.

Just a thought: if you guys are gonna split then I think you should at least share some of your skills (graphics and coding). That way you guys are set to go off in different directions, and your time spent together on the project would have been worthwhile. And you probably have a stong enough bond to learn from eachother with great speed and ease. Many hands make light work 😉

    12. Damnit, Sigvatr is awesome.

We all read his comics. I’ve read them all.
      He’s a sick fuck, alright… but so am I :’/

Awesome physics and gritty graphics, gone. Don’t let this continue, Michal.

I love Soldat. I know that this game won’t go in the same direction, but don’t use that as an excuse for everything Soldat will do better.

      Ponder on that.

    13. Wow that’s a … surprise.
      A metal band huh MM ? 😛

One thing I don’t get is why don’t you continue programming and eric starting to learn proc art? I know that you have an art vision for the game which is hard to tell to a non pro artist but finishing the game and then worrying about graphics is more of a priority. If you finish the game you could probably get an another artist interested in it.
Did Sigvatr give you his work for link-dead?

      @archont
IMO your prev comment about Cortex Command doesn’t hold.
The game is plenty of FUN . It wouldn’t work in multiplayer but it’s fun in singleplayer.

    14. Every game that uses prodedural graphics I’ve seen was ugly.

      1. Procedural geometry – Only if you’re going for the fractal look or want to make the game look like you’re on acid. Darwinia had this to an extent, and so did kkrieger. Both games were abstract.

      2. Procedural textures – will always look boring. No exceptions. While it is possible to apply a decay or wet effect, the textures themselves will be very boring and have no art in them. Look at Love – the textures aren’t even there. And the decay will be applied uniformly as well – the computer won’t know to apply more wet streaks aroud where the window or chimney is. It won’t know to blackend the end of the chimney from soot.

      3. Procedural modelling – lol

Seriously, procedural graphics are good for only selected places, like trees with a fluid LOD (or LOD in general), grass/vegetation or any other place where an object is composed of very many smaller objects that strictly follow a certain mathematical or logical rule.

You need real textures, made in photoshop.

    15. archont: as I’ve stated many times on this blog – just because everyone else is retarded and can’t do it properly doesn’t mean I can’t. If you only want to, you can redefine the term “procedural art” so that everyone from that point will think of it as something beautiful.

    16. Why is the Mona Lisa the most expensive painting while all the copies of it are worthless?

After all, they’re technically the same thing. What’s more, the copies may well be of better quality of paint and canvas.

You know why? It’s because of the process. When the painting was concieved originally, it had the artist’s emotion, engagement and passion. Copies, while technically the same, lack the human factor behind it. Painted by human hand, but not by human mind. That’s also the reason a million monkeys, with a million typewriters in a million years, should they ever create a fascinating novel, would it be dismissed as random garbage.

That’s also why procedural art has nothing to do with art. Then again, if I’d want to watch art I’d go to a fucking museum.

Also, I love your attitude. However as I have played around with procedural content for games, I’m telling you that you WILL abandon this idea and no more than 50% of your content will be prodedurally generated.

    17. “just because everyone else is retarded and can’t do it properly doesn’t mean I can’t”

Yeah I missed that. Fail, a thousand times fail. Believing in yourself and being an arrogant idiot are to different things.

    18. You could make a competition or something like that to find someone that can draw good for you. You have many fans. But maybe the Problem is the avarage age of them, you need someone that has a longer expirience in drawing sprites and backgrounds so they have a uniqe and consequent style.
But drawn sprites and backgrounds is only one part of a game, look at Soldat, there are only few sprites but in combination of techniqes like ragdolls, physics etc. the player can identify himself with the player on the screen much better like in fancy drawn games without any other effects.

    19. @yv3: yeah, but that shouldn’t suggest graphics should be forgotten about.

Soldat is about speed and effectivity, it doesn’t need much feeling from graphics because you don’t really have time to focus on that during gameplay.

But not all games are like that. Take a look at “Braid”: simple but ingenious graphics add 100% to the game feeling.

    20. Procedural graphics could be great. The hard part is defining exactly what it is you want. Most artists can’t even do that, and gain most of their inspiration from fixing mistakes throughout the process of creating art.

Also, you could procedurally generate art THEN have an artist go over it with a fine-tooth comb and really make it shine. It’ll save time (money) and you’ll always have placeholder art, allowing you to improve assets based on their gameplay priority.

    21. Procedural graphics would definitely be suitable for a PLACEHOLDER, yeah. Or for a game with a very abstract style, such as the gorgeous White Butterfly (http://db.tigsource.com/games/white-butterfly). But unless the entire concept of Link-Dead (what was it again?) is getting revamped, they’ll never work together.

    22. shit…-_-

    23. archont:) just because nobody did it, doesn’t mean I can’t.

Procedural graphics could be great. The hard part is defining exactly what it is you want.
      Yes, exactly.

    24. I’m all for procedural art. Go for it, MM.

    25. To be honest, I don’t really care about that graphics. Dispite soldat’s graphics, I found the game to be very entertaining. Its the only good game that I have on my PC. Well, that only because my PC can’t play today’s games very well.

    26. First public beta with placeholder graphics. The community will create the actual graphics and MM will just pick the best samples and uses them in the next release, and the cycle goes over.. Problem solved.

    27. DARK_AVENGER

MM if you don’t finish the fucking game I will come to Poland(or whatever hole you’re hiding in) and beat you like in that fucking video you posted on youtube for the preview of Berserker , you understand MM ?
Fucking crap , what the fuck do I care about Sigvatr ? Fuck him.
All these wankers on this forum are masterbating about Sigvatr , graphics and so forth , just finish the fucking game already, it’s been like 2-3 years… come on…

    28. Clawbug: The community will create the actual graphics and MM will just pick the best samples Haha, that’s called chinese procedural graphics.
