Not having a detailed, step-by-step, written-down plan of what you’re going to work on leads to procrastination.

i’ve been dabbing around with 3d level design for maybe four or five years now, so i have a bit of experience with projects (in my case, single maps) that take thousands of hours to complete. an example of my notes:
…
RAKNIR/OLD CAVE
–CART RIDE
—-MAKE THE AMBIENTSOUND MOVER (X)
—-BUILD THE RAIL SUPPORTS
—-BUILD THE POWERING MECHANISM ON BOTH SIDES
—-CONSIDER MAKING CART A TOGGLE MOVER? (X)
–CART CAVE
—-ADD TARYDIUM CRYSTALS
—-ADD DREDGING PIPES
—-BUILD LIGHTING FIXTURES
—-VERTEX EDIT LAST CAVE BRUSH (X)
–OLD MINE ENTRANCE
—-BUILD DOCK
—-BUILD MAIN STRUCTURE
—-BUILD GIANT DOORS AND ASSOC. MOVERS (X)
…
the (X) marks mean i’ve completed that bit so far. obviously, there is no order to which i get things done (whatever i’m inspired to do at a given time, i’ll do). every couple of weeks i remove the completed stuff from the list and add a couple more things to do. it isn’t step-by-step, but a to-do list, which is good enough.
