  • Berserker & Link-Dead status update

Written by . Posted at 7:22 am on March 21st, 2008

I don’t have anything to show, as I usually have when doing an update,  because lately I haven’t been adding any major additions to Berserker. It’s tweaking and fixing time, no visual updates. So here’s what we’ve done already and what still needs to be done in written form. Just to remind you Berserker is sort of a mod for Link-Dead. It will come out first, but it is the same engine and game architecture, so Transhuman is working on 2 games right now (oh I forgot we got a new site for Transhuman Design made by Sigvatr, he’s not dead by the way, at least that’s what he told me).

Berserker is essentially playable. I wanted to make the gameplay as fast as possible cause that’s my style. There’s no point in working on GUI, or optimizing code when you don’t know if the game is good at all. And at this point I can say it is awesome. There’s nothing more satisfying then hitting a guy in the head with a brick… it’s funny that all these months of hard work are really there just for that one moment… that moment of contact between a head and a brick.

I like to think of this as Beethoven’s Symphonies. Each of them has this one special moment. A symphony is usually an hour long or so, takes 10 years to be written, they are great overall but there’s like 5 seconds of brilliance that you can easily distinguish. It’s a moment where all the motives clash and form a perfect synergy of harmony and motion. That’s when you think – this is genius.

So have we reached that? I can say I like it now that’s all.

What’s left to be done? For a beta version this is what’s left:

    1. multiplayer code

    2. GUI

    3. 1-2 more maps

    4. gameplay tweaking

    5. the controversial stuff that everybody is waiting for

    6. player customizations code

    7. a decent amount of major bugs to be corrected

Overall, just on a subjective note, things are much more complicated than in the Soldat days. Because I’m not only making a game right now, but making and managing 3 games and what is the beginning of a little empire. There’s like 9-10 people working directly or indirectly with me on these projects right now. I can feel it’s a synergy and we’re all making something good and if something wasn’t helping me (Odin?) it would be much much harder. But the god’s are with us and it’s a fun time. I hope it will be fun for you guys soon, when the games start coming out.

    1. yay

    2. What’s the tird game? Berserker, Link-Dead, ?

    3. I’ve been following Link-Dead and Berserker from quite the time when they were announced, but there is a question about the engine you make:
Do you have an OpenGL-Mode, and is it portable (or ported) to *nix systems without use of Wine?

    4. its soldat

    5. I believe the third game is an RPG, I found out because Siggy asked for a composer on the Mod archive forums.

    6. Hm… What you mean by character customization is that…

      -Hair
      -Facial Hair
      -Skin Color
      -Clothes
      -Individual Colors

Are all customizable? If there’s more please do tell.

    7. Krack: yes, and maybe more (tattoos).

Chaosteil: I believe its in the FAQ, one of the posts here. It can be openGL or DX. It’s written with multiplatform compatibility in mind.

The 3rd game is Soldat. That RPG was just a burst of Sigvatr’s inspired madness. We’re not doing it.

    8. I have a feeling the world of Transhuman Design is gonna expand. Into a RPG, RTS, or whatever. With Link-Dead’s modding possibilities, almost nothing is impossible. Character Creation to Map Layout, it’s the most advanced 2D engine ever. I don’t know a whole lot about it but it’s gonna be awesome no doubt. Hope to see Link-Dead real soon. Not looking forward to Berserker much seeing it’s a Tech-Demo of Link-Dead. Keep up the good work!

[I made a name idea for the engine used in Link-Dead and Berserker:]
      [“N-Gyn”]

    9. Finally some news on LD and Berserker!
      Thanks for the update.

    10. I thought you quit working on Soldat because of link dead & berserker?

    11. hey i’m not crazy

    12. Siggy! make your site work >=(

    13. Yeah, Sigvatr, where the hell did your website go?

    14. Thanks for the news, can’t wait for it. Could u guys post all the pics from linkdead/berserker on the website? since they’re spread all around.

About the Transhuman Design Logo… can’t say I appreciate it looking so NS-like, I know it has to be controversial, but the way it looks, its easily seen as only against certain “races” and might be misinterpreted… I’d prefer something that looks rather against the whole world or something bloody instead of something that looks like its just against jews, blacks and gypsies…

Why dont u release the map editor before the game is out? So we can have a couple of user made maps from the beginning.

Hehe, Siggy. I dont think he likes being called that way.
Sigvatr, do u like having a misterious aura around you or why is it you never say much about what’s happening at the moment? I hope not legal issues?

    15. ‘Fuck him I call him Siggy ;D

    16. Objective_truth

Compare yourself to Beethoven once again and you are axxed.

    17. He dosent compare himselp to beethoven but what he does to what beethoven does (almost the same) :)

Cosmin: I think that the map editor need’s to be finish with GUI and all that stuff.

    18. …very objective, very true… NOT. Read the post again and this time focus on it with your brain, not with your ass. Its not about any comparison to Beethoven but about comparison to any ingenious ceation, be it from Beethoven, Da Vinci, Picasso and so on.

    19. Glad to see some progress. On the RPG thing – don’t, unless you plan to reuse existing assets. I might get around to do that one day.

    20. awsome its nearly finished then i will be able to play it when i get out of the mental institiute cus of going crazy to play the game and the title is a little misleading its more of a beserker update not link-dead

    21. “it’s funny that all these months of hard work are really there just for that one moment… that moment of contact between a head and a brick.”

      lol that made me laugh

    22. 7 Angels with 7 Plagues

I’m really looking forward to your games. I’m still having fun with soldat and I’m 23. Either you did something awesome or it’s just the fact that I have some really good weed 😀 😀 😀 Anyways I’m pretty sure that the games will be HIT. You got the right perpective to create great games (At least I hope so 😛 ). Peace!

    23. The Transhuman site is here to stay, for good.

I don’t really have anything worth saying right now so I’m not maintaining my own site.

    24. Cosmin: About the Transhuman Design Logo… can’t say I appreciate it looking so NS-like, I know it has to be controversial, but the way it looks, its easily seen as only against certain “races”

I don’t know if it’s so easy. It’s rather a propaganda style site. Any association is your interpretation I think.

    25. Leetfidle

      10 People! HURRY UP!…jk idc.

    26. cuando lanzas el beta publico

    27. “…very objective, very true… NOT. Read the post again and this time focus on it with your brain, not with your ass. Its not about any comparison to Beethoven but about comparison to any ingenious ceation, be it from Beethoven, Da Vinci, Picasso and so on.”

do you have a problem with people thinking highly of themselves?

    28. “do you have a problem with people thinking highly of themselves?”

Essentially, yes. But only when I believe that person doesn’t deserve to be thinking highly of him or herself.

    29. Not at all, I just didnt like his “Compare yourself to Beethoven once again and you are axxed.” tone.

    30. thinking of tone on Internet is what leads to misinterpretation ecause sometime you just think somone as a kind of tone and it’s not true.

    31. Geez, I’m trying to protect the man’s writing and this is what I get. Fine, axe at will, I dont even care.

    32. Cosmin: Being good doesn’t pay :). Just look at Jesus, Gandhi, ML King, Lennon 😀

    33. Lord Frunkamunch

Is Link-Dead stable enough to create a video of?

    34. Yeah, make a trailer, Michal!

    35. I pooted. I would love to see a trailer of Link-Dead. My reason for pretty much living.

    36. `Stryfe.

Don’t forget me when your company is known by all.

    37. Go Go Go! Charrrge!

    38. About that pic on Transhumandesign.com again… looking past the soldier, I really like the Logo symbol, whose ideea was it? I tried too look some symbols up and see if I could find anything similar, but I didnt manage to find anything.

    39. Michał: I have a favor to ask. I’m sure there are a few developers among the readers of your blog. I’m curious on how your philosophy influences your code. In fact, you can tell quite a bit about the character of a person based on his code. I’m not asking for code though. Instead, write a post about something technical – how you solved certain problems, what turned out to be a bigger problem than expected, what particular pieces of code you’re proud of. Do it for the geeks.

    40. Comment.

    41. :)MoNkEy(:

Yea. The way i see it, however I don’t agree with every single word Michal says, looking at the game Soldat, it shows that somehow his philosophy works. It clears out when you play it.

    42. “About that pic on Transhumandesign.com again… looking past the soldier, I really like the Logo symbol, whose ideea was it? I tried too look some symbols up and see if I could find anything similar, but I didnt manage to find anything.”

I made that, that’s our logo now.

    43. It’s a good logo.
Obviously inspired by Sigvatr’s love for the German Nazi’s eh? ;D

    44. My guess is totalitarism in general, as both communism and fascism often used the same symbolism – the frowning soldier holding a banner being one of them.

    45. great grape

I said it before. I love you guys. I would bear your children, if I were physiologically able, and gay. I would definitely let Michal hit me in the face with a brick.

    46. archont: oh my god, I don’t like to write or talk about code. But I agree with you, you can tell a lot about a person by the style of his code. I think you should ask EnEsCe, he hates me because of my style :D. I might write something technical if I feel the urge for it, until then there’s a post here called “An essay on problem solving” which gives a practical solution to being stuck.

great grape: you can have a baby in your liver… that’s what I heard.

    47. yeah liver is very nutrious….they heal muscles quicker then any other meat as far as i know. i was sore one time… and it literally healed me my entire body in minutes. too bad the smell and taste are atroscious

    48. Yeah, Prometheus was punished by Zeus to have his liver eaten by a vulture every day for eternity, since it would regenerate all the time.

But then Hercules killed the bird, and now Prometheus can have babies too. 😛

    49. another comment

    50. Bricks what? Can we throw them! MORE FUN MORE BLOOD BESERRKKKEKR Release it now or i’ll soon stab you…:O Nah So any other weapons you want to tell us? I seriously cant wait for berserker it will be sick. literally sick. Mm your my hero. We need more violence in games. When can i piss in there mouths until they epically die! DROWNING IN PISS! I”LL SHIT IN THEIR MOUTHS UNTIL THEY DIE! k maybe im abit to excited 😀

    51. I particuly hate people that use variable in the public part of a class it’s the worst thing you can do in C++ MM Stop!! :)

    52. Just a quick question: will both Berserker and Link-Dead be wide-screen resolution compatible? If they already are, then just ignore this post… and ‘m a moron then for not knowing.

I had to finally break down and buy a new LCD monitor (for my digital work) and trying to play Soldat on a widescreen looks crappy. (On a regular screen 4:3 aspect, it looks awesome of course). Most LCD monitors are wide screen these days. The old standard 4:3 is becoming obsolete… unfortunately. I like both wide and regular. My belief is that the ratio of old school monitor users to wide screen users is about 50/50 by now – of the gamers who will play these two games. I may be wrong. It could be 80/20. But, if these games are going to be around for many years – I’d say 5 years from now, your widescreen to oldschool screen ratio may be 90/10. Monitors only last so long.

I definitely won’t mind playing these games on a widescreen with borders. Soldat is not so bad that way. Berserker and Link-Dead in 16:10 fullscreen would look beautiful though.

    53. I used to play soldat on my old computer, which had a 17″ monitor, and I played really well using it. I recently bought my own PC which has a widescreen monitor and I suck at soldat now. But yeah, Link Dead would be sweet on widescreen.

    54. I’d wanna know more about the strategic part in Link-Dead. Any updates on how those hackers really work? What kind of mini-games or whatever method u implement will there be?

And in which way can you coordinate your team? Will there be a squad-leader or just all equally ranked soldiers?

And how did u solve the “what if all want to be hackers” issue? Is there gonna be an upper limit for characters of a certain class (Like in America’s Army)?

Are those shields you were talking about gonna be in for sure? How do they work?

    55. Thank you 😀

    56. Yay, sounds… great!

    57. I WAS, STILL AM, AND WILL BE — THE GREATEST.

    58. Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done. You may also need to explicitly direct questions to people who are quieter than others to encourage them to speak.

    59. I stumbledupon it I will return once again since I book-marked it. Money and freedom is the best way to change, may you be rich and continue to guide others.|
