We were discussing the possible use of force fields in link-dead. They would be activated anywhere by the soldiers. This would change the gameplay dynamic a lot and add a lot of tactical variety. This is an idea I came up with and decided to draw it:
What do you think?
In other news Sigvatr has completed the military sprites. He posted some snapshots and added some detailed descriptions of classes. So if you haven’t seen that yet check it out on his blog.
hehe thats cool! cant wait for this
Im not sure about this.. in fact it will add a lot of tactical variety, but i prefer something like a sandbag barricate!
keep up the good work!
yes. anything to add more tactical variety. do it.
lol thats cool
Good idea! I had this idea in one of my games where for instance a sandbag could only block ballistic bullets, and shields could only block lasers. I think you should implement both sandbags and shields for a bit of balancing.
But hey, as long as you make the shields nice and shiny and glowy, I really don’t mind =D
This would change the gameplay quite a bit. Makes you think about your next move. Good idea but I don’t fully like it. How would you acquire these force fields? Nothing can get through it? Can it be destroyed? How about the unleveled surfaces? And only the Soldiers can use this? Engineers sounds better. Engineers are basically the support, making turrets and repairing then add the force shield to protect others. Soldiers have the “drugs” to heal so do they really need it? Maybe a… Portable Shield? Hope to see more amazing ideas.
oh just an idea you sould make the sheild have a batery life so you cant just camp behind a sheild and when your battery runes out you have to go back to the base to get another battery for it. this idea would make it so you would have to be more tacticle in your thinking
well of course Michal probably knows more about this than me, but I feel having too many options for your character requires having too many keys. The beauty of the best games is the ease of play. What i mean is just dont make it so complicated that people have to hunt for certain buttons. Maybe its just me but I hate having to hit more than 10 different keys. If it is too hard to pick up quickly, and with online games especially, you have to attract people quickly or they will move on. Of course your pre-existing die-hard Soldat fans will embrace it, but the goal is more players than Soldat im sure.
If you do make the fields though, make them reflect shots back at the shooter! You know have them bounce off if possible. Nightwolf style from mortalkombat.
I like that idea, but i rekon force fields should have the same colour glow as their team (red=red team, blue=blue team) and force fields should be able to be deactivated by hackers, another good idea whould be neuteral defence in certain levels, (turrets that shoot at either team that can be taken over by hackers).
i think anything to add to the deepness of the game is a good thing.
it would be cool to have different attributes than the “normal stationary force field” like if they can be moved, change shapes, ect.
LOL! That shit is a hilarious comic.
“LOL! That shit is a hilarious comic.”
Yeah, can we expect a Link-Dead Cartoon?
This idea sound intresting. I remember the force field in the game another world. It was a cool feature. I would limit the ability to only one of the classes.
Seems that there also be medics in the game. cool.
The force field would slowly fade out after some time (like 30 seconds?).
Yeah it should reflect back bullets, that would be awesome.
Since we’Re in the tactical segment of the game right now, and everybody likes that of course… what about some sort of teleporters (maybe one-way teleporters) than could be taken over by a team (hacker) and thus give that team an advantage – e.g. quickly join the front battle lines?
And I would love it if all of these options (including shields and so on) could be modified by the server-admin (on and off buttons + extra settings for most aspect of the game). That way the replayability would be huge, since there could be an endless comnbination of all these aspects. And everybody likes variety. Of course there should be some fixed game modes, but then also the “user-defined” mode, where the admin can set whatever rules he wants.
The officer will most likely carry around a respawn teleporter. Which means if people die they respawn where he put it.
I’ll ask the question here again (after putting it up to discussion on sigvatr’s forum): Are the players going to be automatically or randomly be given a class to play with (class balance / classchange every round), or is it free choice?
As I said before, this would probably lead the game to lack soldiers and be mostly composed of recons and such.
But I guess I shouldnt say this now, cuz I have no ideea how balanced and strong every class is. Still, how is it gonna be?
The goal is to balance the classes to a point where no artificial balancing systems are needed. We’ll see if it is possible.
Hm… This can be like a 2D Star Wars: BattleFront. Which is awesome!
“The officer will most likely carry around a respawn teleporter. Which means if people die they respawn where he put it.”
will you be able to choose if you want to go to that respawn spot cus verry irisponcible offecers might place the teleporter in the midst of battle so whenever somebody dies there put right back into the fight

That’s what multiple classes are for, so that no single class has too many buttons to push.
oh thats a very nice scenario! that would be very cool the shields maybe should have team colors.
A question about the portable teleporter you mentioned, how would you prevent a sniper (recon)From camping and killing people that spawn instantly?
You have to consider that.
An officer will be punished if his men are killed shortly after spawning on him.
“A question about the portable teleporter you mentioned, how would you prevent a sniper (recon)From camping and killing people that spawn instantly?

Officers should be more responsible…
If you want my opinion, I wouldn’t add shields. Maybe a vest or something like in Soldat..
Yeah actually thats a really great idea.
i think soldat needs something new to be added
I dont like the idea of 2 teams facing eatch others in the battle field and waiting for the force field to auto shut down so the battle may begin
Make a chargeable force field. Hold down a button x seconds in order to create a shield with some atributes (duration, what kind of bullet the shield will block…)

Will you be able to choose which spawn point you spawn from?
Hey, I know this doesnt fit in here, but Michal, you had a topic a while ago where u wanted to see some cool 2D games, and I think today is the day on which one of those games was (partially) released: Cortex Command. I think it has a couple of innovative ideeas, maybe you guys wanna check it out: http://www.datarealms.com
Hey, will the shield absorb/reflect bullets from 2 sides or only 1 side? because somebody whit only 1 side shielded people would just camp behind it till a noob shows up. But if it would reflect/absorb bulltes from both sides the guy who want to shot would have to get out of the shield leaving an opening or a counter attack
“Will you be able to choose which spawn point you spawn from?”
Yes
Respawn teleporters should have sheilds around them to stop spawn killing, or a respwawn timer where there is no damage. And cosmin cortex command has been mentioned over 10 times on the forums, it’s not new.
Perhaps an engineer has to maintain a force field. That way if there is a face off you could send recon in to take out the engineer which would stop the shield, opening it up for others. That would help to balance it out a bit more.
Maybe the Engineer building “stationary” shields.. which can be moved only when it is not upgraded at all, and when its upgraded, it it gets bigger and can’t move..
Just throwing an idea out there.
